Being at HOBY is an experience like no other. You begin your seminar scared, but leave feeling confident and ready to change the world, or at least Michael Chavez did.

Michael Chavez serves as Kansas HOBY’s Director of Facilitators. He has been with our seminar for 10 years now, and enjoys every minute of it!

Michael was an ambassador for the 2002 seminar. He was a shy student to begin with, but after attending HOBY, he took a 180-degree turn. “I began taking on new challenges in all aspects of my life and have ever since.” He has carried on the tradition in his professional life at his job as an Admissions Representative for the University of Kansas.

DIRECTOR OF FACILITATORS
Being a director of almost 20 facilitators from all across the state, Michael stays busy. He recruits the greatest leaders in Kansas, and brings them into one place to facilitate the ambassadors groups, along with various other tasks.

Working with these people is always a blast, but with his personality color being a blue, Michael is a lover of all people. Blues are traditionally known to be the emotional, loving, caring people. “I just want every facilitator to be 100% comfortable. It’s all about being cohesive and rubbing off my enthusiasm on others.”

10 YEARS ON STAFF
Serving on staff for 10 years now, there’s one thing that keeps Michael coming back year after year; the ambassadors. “I love seeing them break out of their shells and find their potential. It’s so contagious and spreads like wildfire. It lasts me an entire year of Positive Mental Attitude.”

It's day 3, and the ambassadors couldn't be more excited. With purpose in their walk and the PMA (Positive Mental Attitude) overflowing they set off on the day's adventures

Starting the day with a career breakfast, the ambassadors went around the cafeteria in which a variety of adults with varying professions were sitting. The ambassadors picked their brains and in the course of doing so, learned more about what profession they may want to pursue.
They then learned how to start a movement. Phase 3 of Sarah Koehn's three part leadership course. They identified goals for their school and brainstormed ways to make the goals achievable, with the hopes that the HOBY magic can spread past the K-state campus.
Next, the ambassadors sat in on a panel of professionals in the energy industry. This topic had the students eager to learn about all facets of the industry.

As tweeted by Aesha, ambassador from St. Paul High School:
"That energy panel was so interesting #hobyks #lovedit,"      After a group picture that, with over 200 people, the ambassadors had a presentation to watch. The speaker: Ray Boese, the topic: making those kids who feel invisible, visible. The presentation spoke to many and hopefully inspired good deeds to be done.

After a long day of leadership training, the students are eager for the HOBY dance where they intend to cut a rug on a rugless dance floor (impressive). No doubt, more fun is to be had and more memories to be made.
